Fall at Skipping Rock Cottages: A Seasonal Guide & Itinerary

As the leaves turn to vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold, fall at Skipping Rock Cottages is a breathtaking experience.

Whether you’re looking for scenic hikes, local harvest experiences, or cozy evenings by the fire, autumn is the perfect time to unwind and embrace the season's beauty.

Here are some of our top suggestions for those visiting in the fall months:

For Explorers

One of the best ways to embrace the beauty of fall is by taking long walks through the forest and along the river.

The kids love searching for frogs, climbing trees, and collecting little treasures to bring back to the cottage.

The crisp air, the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, and the sight of geese flying south all add to the magic of the season.

For Animal Lovers

For animal lovers, horseback riding at Windsong Ranch offers a fun and immersive experience. Their weekly mentored horse time focuses on trail riding and equine connection, making it perfect for riders of all ages.

If you're looking for something even more unique, consider visiting Alpine Ridge Alpacas, where you can meet and interact with these gentle, friendly animals.

For Wine Lovers

For those who enjoy adventure with a touch of indulgence, the Apple Pie Trail Paddle and Wine Tour is a must-try. This experience combines scenic paddling with a relaxing wine tasting, offering a perfect blend of nature and luxury.

Similarly, the Hike & Wine experience takes you through breathtaking trails before rewarding you with a glass of locally crafted wine.

For Hikers

There’s no better way to take in the beauty of autumn than with a refreshing hike. The crisp air and vibrant fall colours make every step feel like a postcard-worthy moment.

Start by exploring the 9-acre forested property, where winding trails lead through a canopy of brilliant red, orange, and gold.

If you're looking for even more breathtaking scenery, nearby trails offer some of the best views of the season:

  • Bruce Trail – One of Ontario’s most iconic trails, this historic route follows the Niagara Escarpment and offers stunning panoramic views of the fall landscape.

  • Old Baldy Point – A rewarding hike that leads to a spectacular lookout, perfect for taking in the autumn splendor.

  • Hoggs Falls – A hidden gem featuring a beautiful waterfall surrounded by a peaceful forest, making it an ideal spot for a quiet, scenic walk.

  • Georgian Trail – This scenic shoreline trail along Georgian Bay is great for a relaxed stroll or a family bike ride with views of the water and fall foliage.

  • Tom Thomson Trail – Inspired by the famous Canadian artist, this trail blends nature and creativity, making it a must-visit for art lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

  • Trout Hollow Trail – A tranquil escape into nature, this peaceful trail winds through forests and along the river, offering a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle.

Whether you’re looking for a leisurely walk or a challenging hike, these trails provide the perfect way to experience the magic of fall.

For Adventure Seekers

Thrill-seekers won’t want to miss caving at Metcalfe Rock. Exploring underground passageways and rugged terrain makes for an unforgettable adventure.

Finally, one of the most awe-inspiring natural events of the season takes place at the Thornbury Dam, where Chinook salmon make their way upstream to spawn in the Beaver River. From late August to late October, these powerful fish leap through the Fishway, determined to reach their spawning grounds.

Witnessing this incredible migration is a reminder of nature’s resilience and beauty.

For Apple Lovers

Fall is apple season, and there’s nothing sweeter than biting into a crisp apple you picked yourself. Whether you choose the apple trees right on the property or take a short trip to Oak Lane Orchards, the experience is always rewarding. Bring your harvest back to the cottage and bake a homemade apple pie, or simply enjoy the juicy freshness straight from the tree.

In addition to apple picking, Meaford and the surrounding areas come alive with local harvest festivals and events. A visit to the Meaford Farmers’ Market is a must, offering fresh produce, handmade goods, and a taste of the region’s seasonal bounty.

For Foodies

A trip to the cottage isn’t complete without stopping by the Thornbury Bakery. Their chocolate peanut butter bars are legendary (trust me, you’ll want to grab a couple extras). Pair one with a hot cup of coffee or cider for the perfect autumn treat.

For a warm and hearty meal, cozy up in one of the many local cafés that feature seasonal dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a bowl of homemade soup or a pumpkin spice latte after a day of outdoor fun.

For Happy Campers

As the sun sets and the cool evening air sets in, gathering around the fire pit becomes the highlight of the day. Sharing stories, making s’mores, and just enjoying each other’s company under a sky full of stars is something we’ll never tire of. The warmth of the fire, the laughter of loved ones, and the peaceful surroundings create memories that last a lifetime.

For Homebodies

When the temperatures drop, retreating indoors feels just as magical.

The cottage’s cozy loft living space is perfect for curling up by the fire with a good book, playing board games with family and friends, or settling in for a relaxed movie night. There’s something about the slower pace of fall that makes these simple moments feel extra special.
