Our Family’s Cottage Bucket List

Hi everyone—Breanna here!

One of the best things about owning Skipping Rock Cottages is that we get to experience so many special moments as a family. We designed the cottage with families and groups in mind because we know firsthand how precious time together is.

Whether it’s a multi-generational vacation, a long-awaited reunion, or just a quiet weekend escape, we wanted to create a space where you could truly relax and reconnect.

From cozy movie nights by the fire to adventures on the water, every detail was chosen to make time together feel extra special.

Some of our favourite core memories at the cottage so far include:

Walks through the forest and along the river: The kids love searching for frogs, climbing trees, and seeing what treasures they can find along the way.

Tobogganing at Beautiful Joe Park and skating on the trails at Blue Mountain: Winter adventures are always a highlight for us.

Visiting the Thornbury Bakery: Their chocolate peanut butter bars are legendary (trust me, you’ll want to grab a couple extras).

Cozy winters at Coffin Ridge Vineyard: Sitting by the fire pits with a glass of wine and a pizza from their outdoor oven is the perfect way to unwind after a long day.

Ordering pizza from Amici's: Eating it on the porch while watching the sunset has become a family tradition.

Horseback riding nearby at a local farm and feeding the bunnies right on the property: The kids absolutely love this, and honestly, so do I. For the bunnies we actually provide feed and the property includes a sign where their typical sighting spots are.

Evenings around the fire pit: Sharing stories, making s’mores, and just enjoying each other’s company under the stars is something we’ll never get tired of.

Hosting special events with a private chef or massage therapist: For my dad’s 75th birthday, we had Christina Sheardown cook a beautiful meal, and Jason (RMT) came for my girls’ weekend to do massages—it made the weekend so special.

Family trips to Story Book Park: The kids love the rides and splash pad, and it’s always fun to spend a day there.

But the truth is—there’s still so much we want to explore! We’ve been lucky to experience a lot already, but our family’s cottage bucket list just keeps growing. Here are some things we can’t wait to check out (and think you might love too):

Waterfall Hunting – There are so many beautiful waterfalls nearby that we’re itching to visit:

  • Eugenia Falls

  • Inglis Falls

  • McGowan Falls

  • Indian Falls

  • Jones Falls

  • Weavers Creek Falls

Hiking the Bruce Trail, Old Baldy Lookout Point & Hoggs Falls Trails – The perfect way to explore nature, get some fresh air, and enjoy a little adventure while taking in the most breathtaking views in Ontario. We’ve done parts of it, but there’s still so much to discover.

Exploring the Georgian Trail – This scenic trail follows the shoreline of Georgian Bay and is perfect for a relaxed family bike ride or walk.

Tom Thomson Trail – As a lifelong art lover, I’m excited to explore this trail named after one of Canada’s most iconic artists.

Trout Hollow Trail – We’ve heard it’s a peaceful, nature-filled walk—exactly the kind of place we love.

If you’re staying at Skipping Rock Cottages, we’d love to hear about your own adventures!

Whether you’re visiting a new spot or discovering a hidden gem, let us know what you find—we’re always looking for more places to add to our list.

So, if you see us apple-picking, waterfall-hopping, or exploring a new trail—say hi! And if you check any of these off your own bucket list while you’re staying with us, be sure to tag us on social media (@SkippingRockCottages).

Here’s to new adventures and making memories together!
